This course is an attempt to understand the problem called Indian Mathematics Education. The more general purpose is to develop a method of inquiry into the evolution of Knowledge and Education in India, as we see it in its present forms. We use Mathematics specifically as a knowledge system to illustrate this method - in order to be able to pay the kind of attention that the specificities of any knowledge system deserves for such an attempt.

Our collective responsibility towards environmental sustainability

Various human activities have led to severe depletion of earth's resources. Environmental pollution has been a part of life for many centuries but it has became a burning problem since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Due to environmental pollution, the drastic changes such as depletion of the ozone layer, global warming and climatic changes are occurring across the world. The major factors responsible for these changes are deforestation, rapid increase in population and irresponsible use of resources. Nature has not taken these changes kindly and has shown its fury in various manners. The number of natural disasters is on the rise. A root cause of this alarming situation is the neglect by average human beings towards their environmental responsibility. Blinded by the material world, human beings have forgotten that mother earth and living beings are complementary to each other. Adopting a zero waste lifestyle would pave the way for bettering our relationship with nature. The talk will focus on our collective responsibility towards environmental sustainability.
Dr. Sharad Kale did his M. Sc. and PhD in Microbiology from Pune University. He joined Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1976 and served as a scientist in various capacities till August 2016. He retired as an Associate Director, Bioscience Group, Head Nuclear Agriculture and Biotechnology Division and Head Food Technology Division. His major contributions are in the fields of: Pesticide microbial interactions and environmental impact of pesticides, Green synthesis of metal nano particles using biological routes, and Solid waste management and Nisargruna concept. He has over 70 publications to his name and has developed several technologies which are in the public domain. Dr. Kale was the Chief Coordinator for several international projects on the use of radioisotopes in environmental research, which were initiated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna, Austria). Additionally, he has written many popular science articles in Marathi, and conducted numerous workshops with students, teachers, and citizenry for over two decades bridging the gap between science and society.
