Title:

Performative Braiding: an enactive cognition framework to study the way teachers track and change learners' mental models of scientific mechanisms

Abstract:

Science teachers need to constantly track students' thinking, as well as their own actions, to finetune the way their actions change student thinking. This process of modeling and changing student minds is critical for learners to develop new science and mathematics concepts. However, the cognitive processes and performative steps involved in teachers' modeling of student minds, and the way this modeling process brings about conceptual change in learners, have not been characterized systematically. No formal models of teachers' mind-modeling process exist in the education or learning/cognitive sciences literature. Analyzing science classroom data from an enactive cognition perspective, we outline a general framework to capture the processes involved in science teachers' modeling of student thinking. This account, based on case studies, provides an integrated analytical framework to investigate, and augment, teaching practices and teacher training. In this seminar, I discuss the development of this framework, some possible applications and theoretical implications.
