Khagolvani: Expanding Astronomy Access to Migrant and Rural Children
Khagolvani is an astronomy education initiative supported by the International Astronomical Union's Office of Astronomy for Development (IAU-OAD), aimed at bridging the gap in science learning opportunities for children from migrant and rural communities in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Many of these learners face disruptions in formal education due to seasonal migration, limited school resources, and socio-economic challenges. Based on the belief that Sky is open to all, this project aims to bring astronomy directly to these children through hands-on activities and stargazing sessions. Along with the hands-on activities, we also produce multilingual learning materials.
This presentation will outline the project's design philosophy, pedagogical framework, and initial outcomes, focusing on how astronomy can act as a powerful gateway to curiosity, critical thinking, and self-expression. Activities are being developed in local contexts, encouraging children to explore the night sky, understand celestial phenomena, and engage with science as an accessible and joyful pursuit.
