Abstract:

Based in the University of California Santa Cruz, the Creating Equity in STEAM (CrEST; https://crest.ucsc.edu/) umbrella of programs was first put in place in the summer of 2020 and has a strong focus on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) students and educators. CrEST includes the following three programs in the following logical progression: (1) Shadow the Scientists (StS; https://shadow.ucsc.edu/) allows students and educators to "dip their toes in the water" by interacting online and in real time with scientists and the scientific process during the running of actual research experiments; (2) Python and Research (PyaR; https://pyar.ucsc.edu/) and R and Research in Computational Biology (ReComBio) are free online tutorials that teach the participants a key set of technical skills – i.e., "swim strokes" – coding in the context of research; and (3) Science Internship Program (SIP; https://sip.ucsc.edu/) allows students "to take a deep dive" and immerse themselves in authentic open ended STEAM research under the close mentorship of world experts. A handful of other education/outreach programs under CrEST are affiliated with/offshoots of SIP. The core of CrEST is the engagement of young people in critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning. Programs like those under the CrEST umbrella have an important role to play in addressing the serious systemic inequities in education that exist throughout the world today.
