Ph.D. Thesis Title:

Social, Political and Economic management of Uncertainty and Mathematics Education

Abstract:

Probabilistic and Statistical thinking is considered as crucial skills for our times, but understanding the role of uncertainty in public and private lives is challenging. While probability and statistics are part of school curricula, textbooks often fail to address the diversity of uncertainties or the role of subjectivity and institutions in decision-making. This thesis started as an attempt at exploring how uncertainty is managed and understood, both in everyday life, particularly occupational contexts, and in educational contexts. Through an ethnography of fishing auctions, I aim to highlight the collective nature of mathematical activities and relational and institutional aspects of uncertainty management. In this talk, I will also discuss what I consider to be specific learnings from the ethnographic experience for mathematics teaching and learning. Drawing on this work, we also designed a board game as a potential learning ecology to experience and reflect on uncertainty. I will share insights from the playtesting of the game as well.
