Exploring Probability in Classrooms
The presentation shall have two parts. In the first part, I shall discuss a tentative ideological position which combines (aims of) education, the justification problem of education, transdisciplinarity etc. I shall also identify discourse - a set of exclusive patterned activities by a group of people - as a desired unit of analysis and briefly discuss commognitive framework which treat Mathematics as a discourse.
In the second part, I shall present analysis of the data collected from three different probability classrooms. I shall highlight observable patterns in the discourse of probability and raise questions about the role of assessment in shaping classroom discourses and the effectiveness of theories developed in different socio-cultural contexts in analyzing 'our' data. I will conclude the presentation by sharing my reflections on the fieldwork.
