Towards Meaningful Integration of SSI-based Discussions in Indian Science Classrooms: Supporting Teachers for Change
Socioscientific Issues (SSIs) provide a framework for students to explore real-world issues that intersect with science and technology (S&T), allowing them to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. However, incorporating SSIs into teaching practice poses a significant hurdle for teachers, necessitating a shift in pedagogical approaches. Research indicates that teachers often grapple with the complexity of SSIs, highlighting the need for tailored support to aid their transition to SSI-based pedagogy.
This study was designed to support science teachers in effectively integrating SSIs into their regular teaching practice. By enhancing teachers' understanding of SSIs and providing them with the necessary tools and resources, this study aimed to equip them with the skills to engage students in meaningful discussions and critical thinking about current and controversial science-related issues. The study employed a Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology, conducted in three stages. The first stage involved the development and implementation of an SSI-based module on groundwater-related issues with secondary science students. Insights gained from this stage informed the intervention program in the second stage. DBR helped design and implement an intervention program that involved teachers in collaboratively designing and refining SSI-based modules within real-world educational settings, ensuring practical relevance and effectiveness. In the third stage, teachers reflected on their learnings and independently developed another SSI-based module. Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) served as a framework to identify challenges, best practices, and useful resources to aid teachers in integrating the SSI-based approach using thematic analysis. Through a combination of theoretical insights, practical applications, and collaborative intervention program, this study aimed to advance understanding of strategies and guidelines to support teachers, ultimately promoting the integration of SSIs in regular science classrooms.
