In our technology dominated world Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) are everywhere. They are part and parcel of our bags too - like the charger for mobile or laptop. Though for many of us they are just a black box, small or big, lot of science is involved in them. In Indian education, particularly at the school level, technological advancements in material sciences does not get the attention they deserve. To learn about the smallest component like diode or zener diode one need to enter college. Solid state devices (SSD) remains untouched because they are considered to be dealt by engineers only.
In my lecture, I will discuss the theoretical aspects of power supply. I will show what is inside the black box and new semiconductor devices which have brought down the size of electronic gadgets. Since power supply in laboratory is an essential component it is interesting to know its journey from huge size to miniature. The talk will also dwell upon circuit diagram and different sections of SMPS, trouble shooting, skilled involved in its design and repair and how to reduce the junk in our surrounding which will save our environment.
Sonawane Vinodkumar is a scientific officer at HBCSE and has a masters in electronics from University of Pune. He initially joined TIFR, Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics (X-Ray group) where he worked on gas filled x-ray detector and front end electronics. Sonawane then joined HBCSE and has been working in science Education for the last 28 years. He has special interest in development of laboratory experiments for school and college and fabrication of electronic circuits. Sonawane is also a master trainer for Global learning and observation to benefit earths environment (GLOBE) and trained more than 800 Teachers across various states. In HBCSE he is engaged in school science and research development & teachers training program, published papers at international and national conferences and books in collaboration with his group members. He is a recipient of 2009 Maharashtra state award for his book " Kruti Pradhan Vidnyan Adhyapan". His other interests include science popularization, history, and constitution of India.
