Thursday Seminar on "Explicit Teaching of Nature of Science: Learning, Retention, and Transfer"

Date: 15 July, 2021
Time: 15:30 - 16:30

Venue: Online Meeting/Video Conferencing

Coordinator: Dr. Mashood K. K.

Speaker:

Prof. Rola Khishfe

Abstract (in speaker's own words):

In this presentation, nature of science (NOS) will be introduced as a component of scientific literacy. As there is no single definition for NOS, there is an agreement about some characteristics of the scientific knowledge that we can reasonably teach to K-12 students. Research about NOS will be examined in relation to the different approaches to teach NOS: namely, an explicit approach. The contexts for teaching NOS using an explicit approach are noted as history of science, scientific inquiry, and socio-scientific issues. By using an explicit approach in the different contexts, we will take a look at the learning about NOS, the retention of NOS understandings, and the transfer of NOS understandings. Finally, the presentation will conclude with the lessons learned regarding the research about NOS along with the factors enhancing its retention and transfer.
