Abstract:

It has been almost 20 years since the initiation of the Biology Olympiad Programme at HBCSE. Although the programme is goal orientated and involves selecting and training students to participate in the international competition, this programme has several facets that make it contributory to the education system as a whole. The unique experimental component of this programme has resulted in development of several analytical and challenging labs, which over the years, have been modified to cater to high school and undergraduate programmes. More importantly, the programme has been successful in spreading the message that Biology is a subject that can be as interesting as any other subject and requires conceptual understanding and reasoning to solve problems. In later years, programmes such as NIUS and Teacher Exposure Camps were initiated that have been the offshoots of the Olympiad Programme.

In my talk, I will put forth the evolution of the Biology Olympiad Programme in HBCSE and its implications.
