Topic:

Thoughts on education in a small research-oriented science university

Speaker:

Prof. Jayant Udgaonkar (Director, IISER, Pune)

Abstract of the talk:

Students entering a small elite research-oriented university for their undergraduate education are often, on the average, more bright and focused than students elsewhere. Having the right balance of depth and breadth in designing the curriculum for educating these students is not an easy task. What type of education can ensure that students leave such a university as individuals who think better, who are more self-confident, and who are more aware of the problems facing the world, than when they come in?

About the speaker:

Prof. Jayant Udgaonkar is an eminent biophysical chemist and currently the Director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. Prof. Udgaonkar obtained his MSc degree in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai and his PhD in Biochemistry from Cornell University. He joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1990, with an appointment at the yet to be established National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS).
