Thoughts on education in a small research-oriented science university
Prof. Jayant Udgaonkar (Director, IISER, Pune)
Prof. Jayant Udgaonkar is an eminent biophysical chemist and currently the Director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. Prof. Udgaonkar obtained his MSc degree in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai and his PhD in Biochemistry from Cornell University. He joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1990, with an appointment at the yet to be established National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS). From 1997 to 2008, he served as the first Dean of NCBS, where he helped set up both academic and research programs. His contributions to research in protein folding has won him many laurels and prestigious awards, both national and international. He is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy and The World Academy of Sciences.
