Bibha Chowdhuri, the first woman scientist at TIFR (1949-53), did pioneering work in cosmic ray physics with D.M. Bose during 1939-43 that paved the way for pi-meson discovery. The memorial lecture is a token of tribute by TIFR and aimed to provide inspiration to young researchers, particularly women.
The first Bibha Chowdhuri memorial lecture will be given by Prof. Mahananda Dasgupta, an alumnus of TIFR, who is known internationally for her research on accelerator based fusion and fission. The details of the talk are given below.
Prof. Mahananda Dasgupta, Department of Nuclear Physics, Research School of Physics, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.
Nuclear Reactions: Spanning Fundamental Physics to Applications
Nuclear reactions at energies near the Coulomb barrier are an excellent laboratory to study interacting quantum systems as nuclei are isolated from external environments, and collision outcomes are sensitively dependent on their quantum structure. It is a fertile research area as advances in experimental and theoretical/computational work continue to produce new result that challenge established understanding. I will talk about the experiments done by our group at the Australian National University that demonstrate the effect of quantum structure on tunnelling, heavy element synthesis, and discuss how improved understanding of nuclear reactions can impact areas such as cancer therapy using heavy ions.
The talk will be live streamed on YouTube: https://youtu.be/T4MV70eioF8 on the Vigyan Vidushi channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_QSNTFQEeXwgMskFV2QtA
You may kindly invite others to this public lecture as well.
