Exploring Implications of the Social Model of Disability for Mathematics Education
This thesis is an outcome of exploring what "the social model of disability"' could mean for mathematics education, through a Case Study of learning centre for blind children, in Mumbai, where the researcher volunteered as teacher for over the period of six years.
By drawing from students experiences with discrimination, and my field observations with conducting teaching sessions, the study demonstrated that creating inclusive environments for blind mathematics learners is indeed possible if conditions favour collective learning. And moreover, such conditions lead to a richer mathematical interaction among participants. However, as a follow up study of students who had moved on from the study centre and sought jobs and higher studies showed, exclusion is a structural problem, and the political economy of exclusion poses limits to how much disablement can be overcome merely by making mathematics classrooms inclusive, thereby highlighting the need for collective action.
