Abstract:

In the post-RTI era, more and more examinations have been opting for safe harbour of water-tight close ended problems (MCQs or similar), which can be machine graded. However, I believe that there is a certain charm and merit in inclusion of open-ended problems even in high stakes examinations. In context of Olympiads, where most top performers have undergone years of training for competitive examinations, the open ended questions can act as distinguishing markers between those with examination oriented approach and those with a more holistic learning approach. I will take few sample cases of the questions I designed at various levels of Astronomy Olympiad to illustrate this point.
