NIUS Workshop on "Using Geometric Reasoning to Teach Vector Calculus"

Date: 15 March, 2017
Time: 10:30 - 12:30

Venue: NIUS Building Room - 204

Coordinator: Prof. Anwesh Mazumdar

By - Prof. Tevian Dray & Prof. Corinne Manogue, We will share some active engagement curricular materials that use geometric reasoning to bridge the gap between vector calculus as taught in mathematics courses and electromagnetism as taught in physics courses. This workshop will include materials appropriate for both disciplines.

NIUS Seminar on "Bridging the Gap: Vector Calculus in Mathematics and Physics"

Date: 15 March, 2017
Time: 16:00 - 18:00

Venue: NIUS Building Lecture Hall - G4

Coordinator: Prof. Anwesh Mazumdar

Speaker: Prof. Tevian Dray, Students often have trouble "bridging the gap" between the different presentations of vector calculus in mathematics and physics courses, even though they tend to cover the same topics. In education research at Oregon State University, we have discovered radical differences in the ways in which mathematicians and physicists think about these ideas. I will describe our efforts to bridge this gap through the use of geometric reasoning.
