Thursday Seminar
Date: 13 October, 2016
Time: 15:00 - 16:00
Venue: NIUS Building Lecture Hall - G4
Coordinator: Prof. Jyotsna Vijapurkar
Topic: The Processes in Composting: The Natural and The Anthropogenic,
Speaker: Prof. Ankush Gupta,
Abstract:
A composting facility was recently re-initiated at HBCSE to recycle
the in-house garden and canteen waste. This seminar is intended to
understand some crucial elements of the composting process. We shall
discuss the natural processes involved in the decomposition of matter
by various living organisms including bacteria, fungi, insects, large
animals, with focus on features observable at macroscopic level.
We shall also try to understand the spectrum of composting practices
that have evolved over the past in various cultures including the more
recent technological solutions in the market. Apart from a process of
managing waste and obtaining a valuable product, the seminar hopes to
convey that composting is a rich process which can be of value in
science education from primary level to doctoral research.
